This website is part of a network of sites devoted to promoting compact, walkable new towns. Visit our main website which is full of information, news, web links, books, and resources about creating livable communities and smart growth.

NEW TOWNS are compact, walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods that are a pleasure to live in. Also known as new urbanism towns and villages, these places are becoming more popular as people have had enough of suburban traffic jams, and the lack of good urbanism. New towns are places where everything you need is within walking distance (shops, restaurants, movies, services), including nice public squares to relax in and meet people.

In a walkable new town you can live without a car, since the compact layout makes it easy to get around on foot, bicycle, rollerblades, or by trains & light rail. These compact towns are a drastic contrast to our sprawling suburbs where everything is spread out, separated by uses, and connected only by roads and highways. This makes a car an absolute necessity in suburbia, and since everyone has to drive for every single trip they make, we have constant, irritating traffic jams, all day long. Life in a new town following the principles of urbanism is completely different - pedestrian oriented, and offering a higher quality of life, and a friendlier, more pleasant place to live.

"Make no small plans, they have no magic to stir men's blood, and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever growing insistency." -Daniel Burnham
